Ford Orders Major Recall of F-Series Trucks Over Instrument Cluster Screen Failure

A widespread software issue affecting Ford’s most popular pickup lineup has triggered another large-scale recall, underscoring the growing challenges automakers face as vehicles become increasingly software-driven. Ford Motor Company has recalled more than 355,000 F-Series trucks after discovering that a defect could cause the digital instrument cluster to go completely blank during vehicle startup.

The recall covers the 2025 F-150 as well as 2025 and 2026 Super Duty models, including the F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550. According to regulators, every vehicle included in the campaign is believed to contain the defect, making the scope of the action unusually broad.

What Triggered the Recall

The issue centers on the instrument panel cluster, the digital display that shows speed, warning lights, and other critical driving information. A software error can cause the screen to remain black when the vehicle is started under specific conditions. When this happens, drivers may be unable to see essential alerts or operating data, increasing the risk of an accident.

The problem was formally disclosed through filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which noted that unreadable warning indicators and gauges present a clear safety concern. Dealers have been instructed to update the affected software at no cost to owners.

Models and Production Timeline Affected

The recall applies to hundreds of thousands of trucks produced using the same instrument cluster software configuration. The defective software was introduced into production in mid-May 2024 and remained in use until late July 2025. As a result, vehicles built throughout this period share the same vulnerability.

Notably, the 2025 F-150 uses an instrument panel design similar to that found in the 2024 F-150 Platinum, meaning the issue affects Ford’s latest digital cockpit architecture rather than an outdated system.

How the Failure Occurs

Ford’s internal investigation determined that the blank screen can appear when the engine is restarted at a particular point after being turned off. During this sequence, the instrument cluster’s embedded software may encounter a memory protection fault.

The clusters were supplied by Visteon, a Michigan-based Tier 1 supplier. Engineers traced the problem to a timing issue during the cluster’s sleep mode. Specifically, a controller area network wake-up interrupt may occur too quickly, triggering a fault in memory protection logic and preventing the display from initializing properly.

Ford’s Internal Review and Escalation

The issue first surfaced internally on May 9, when Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group began receiving reports of blank instrument cluster screens in some 2025 F-150 trucks. Over the following months, the automaker conducted a deeper analysis in coordination with Visteon and federal safety officials.

From May through August, Ford reviewed supplier data, software behavior, and real-world vehicle information. Connected vehicle analytics revealed that approximately 65 percent of the vehicles examined had ignition cycle patterns that could potentially trigger the display failure. Investigators also determined that the likelihood of the issue could increase as vehicles age, due to repeated power cycles and accumulated operating conditions.

Based on these findings, Ford approved the recall on August 15.

Warranty Claims and Early Warning Signs

Before the recall decision, Ford had already received dozens of warranty claims potentially linked to the defect. The first known claim dates back to January 30, 2025, indicating that the issue had been present in the field for several months before reaching recall status.

By late June, the company had logged 95 warranty claims related to blank instrument cluster displays. In addition, Ford identified at least one vehicle owner complaint submitted directly to the NHTSA that may be connected to the same software fault.

The Fix and Dealer Instructions

To resolve the issue, dealers will install updated instrument cluster software that disables the problematic memory protection feature. This change is intended to prevent the timing conflict that leads to the blank screen at startup.

Ford has instructed dealers to perform the repair on any affected vehicle that comes in for service, even if the owner has not yet received an official recall notification. Owner letters were scheduled to be mailed beginning September 2.

Recall Volume Highlights Broader Quality Pressures

This recall adds to a growing list of safety actions for Ford in 2025. Since the beginning of the year, the automaker has issued 109 recalls, affecting more than 7.8 million vehicles in total, based on NHTSA data.

Recent actions include a recall of over 103,000 F-150 pickups due to rear axle hub bolts that could fracture, as well as a separate campaign covering more than 300,000 pickup and SUV models for a potential loss of electronic power brake assist. Together, these recalls reflect the complexity of modern vehicle systems and the heightened scrutiny manufacturers face as software becomes central to vehicle operation.
