Ford has finally addressed one of the most frustrating features in the Mustang Mach-E. The 2025 model ditches the rotary-knob shifter, a design that many drivers found awkward. This change improves the driving experience and brings the Mach-E in line with other top electric vehicles (EVs).

A Simple, Effective Update

The rotary shifter was a pain to use. It took up valuable space and required drivers to look down when shifting. Ford has now switched to a more intuitive column shifter, a design already used by other EV makers like GM, Hyundai, and Rivian. This change makes shifting easier and more comfortable, allowing drivers to operate the vehicle without distractions.

During my week with the 2025 Mach-E Rally, I noticed the improvement immediately. The new shifter made parking and daily driving simpler. It was a much-needed update in a car that has struggled with counterintuitive controls.

Other Challenges Remain

Despite the upgrade, some of the Mach-E’s features are still inconvenient. The press-to-pop door buttons require two motions to open the door, which feels unnecessary. Also, accessing the frunk involves navigating a slow, multi-step menu, which could be much easier.

The infotainment system, though visually clear, is still lagging behind. The menus load slowly, and the screen’s response time is delayed when scrolling. It’s as if the car is running outdated technology, which detracts from an otherwise strong vehicle.

The Industry’s Shift Back to Simplicity

Ford’s decision to redesign the Mach-E’s shifter follows a broader trend in the automotive industry. Many automakers are reconsidering the overuse of touch-sensitive controls. Volkswagen, for example, has announced it will bring back physical buttons, acknowledging that “it’s a car, not a phone.” Even companies like Hyundai and Scout are returning to more intuitive, tactile controls.

Ford’s update represents a larger shift towards more user-friendly features, as automakers recognize that minimalism should not come at the cost of practicality.

Looking Ahead: The Future of the Mach-E

The 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E marks a significant improvement. Ford is continually adding features to enhance the vehicle’s value, such as the new column shifter. As the EV market grows and manufacturers invest more in technology, we can expect even more affordable EVs with better user interfaces.

While the Mach-E still has areas for improvement, the 2025 model shows Ford is heading in the right direction. With more updates like this, EVs are becoming easier and more enjoyable to drive.
