At CES 2026, Ford announced a bold plan to democratize software-defined vehicles (SDVs). It wants to bring AI and smart features to mainstream buyers—not just luxury customers.
The automaker draws a parallel to Henry Ford’s Model T. Just as that car made driving affordable, Ford now aims to do the same with advanced vehicle software.
Starting in early 2026, Ford will launch its Ford AI Assistant in the Ford and Lincoln smartphone apps. Users can take a photo of an item—like cement bags or a TV—and ask, “Will this fit?”
The AI will analyze the image. It will estimate size using your phone’s camera and sensors. Then it will tell you how much fits in your truck or SUV.
The system must avoid AI “hallucinations” to stay accurate. A built-in in-vehicle version will arrive in 2027.
Ford also plans to expand BlueCruise, its hands-free driver-assist system. Today, it’s mostly on high-end and EV models. Yet it already runs on 1.2 million vehicles.
Now, Ford says it has cut hardware costs by building key parts in-house. This makes BlueCruise cheaper to produce—without sacrificing capability.
By 2027, an updated BlueCruise will appear on vehicles using the new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform.
Then, by 2028, Ford will roll out true Level 3 autonomy. This lets drivers look away from the road. Crucially, it won’t be limited to expensive trims.
To make this possible, Ford redesigned its vehicle architecture. Older cars use many small modules on a slow network. That can’t support advanced autonomy.
Instead, Ford created a single, powerful compute module. It handles infotainment, audio, sensors, and ADAS all at once—like Tesla and Rivian do.
This new system is essential for Level 3 and future AI features. Ford hasn’t said exactly when it will launch. But it will likely arrive with the UEV or BlueCruise L3.
Still, risks remain. Memory chip prices are rising due to AI data center demand. That could raise hardware costs—and vehicle prices.
Even so, Ford’s vision is clear. The Ford software-defined vehicles strategy aims to put smart, upgradable cars in the hands of everyday drivers. If it works, it could transform mass-market motoring—just like the Model T did.
