All Current and Upcoming EVs with Solid-State Batteries

The future of electric vehicles (EVs) is moving toward solid-state batteries, which promise to revolutionize the industry. These “holy grail” batteries are expected to offer better performance, faster charging, and longer ranges with improved safety. While solid-state batteries are still under development, several EVs powered by them or semi-solid-state batteries are already available or on the horizon.

Nio ET7/ET5

In late 2023, Nio introduced the ET7 sedan, equipped with a 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery. This technology enabled the vehicle to achieve over 648 miles on a single charge in real-world conditions, even in cold temperatures. In China, Nio owners can rent this upgraded battery for long trips while using smaller 70-75 kWh packs for daily driving. This innovative approach could become a game-changer for the EV market.

IM Motors L6

IM Motors, the luxury arm of China’s SAIC Motors, has made significant strides with semi-solid-state batteries. The IM L6, which competes with the Tesla Model 3, offers a 133 kWh semi-solid-state battery. This battery delivers over 620 miles of range and features a 900-volt architecture. With this, drivers can add 248 miles of range in just 12 minutes of charging. Priced between $28,000 and $45,600, it provides an affordable entry into cutting-edge battery technology.

MG4

MG Motor, a British carmaker owned by SAIC, is launching the MG4, the first affordable mass-market EV powered by a semi-solid-state battery. While the specific range is yet to be confirmed, MG claims the semi-solid-state battery uses only 5% liquid electrolyte, making it a more efficient and safer alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. The MG4 is expected to be priced between $10,100 and $14,400, offering an affordable option for those interested in advanced battery technology.

Voyah Passion (Locally Called Voyah Zhuiguang)

The Passion sedan, launched by Dongfeng Motor Corporation’s premium brand Voyah, features an 82 kWh semi-solid-state battery. This version provides 360 miles of range, according to the China Light-Duty Test Cycle (CLTC). For those looking for more range, a larger 109 kWh battery offers up to 453 miles. Priced between $45,000 and $60,000, this vehicle combines luxury with state-of-the-art battery technology.

Dongfeng Fengshen E70 (Demo EV)

Dongfeng Motor Corporation began testing semi-solid-state batteries in prototype E70 electric sedans in 2022. With a range exceeding 620 miles, the commercial production of this semi-solid-state battery is slated for 2026. The company is also developing a solid-state battery for future vehicles, further improving the performance of the E70.

Dodge Charger Daytona EV (Demo EV)

Stellantis and Factorial, a battery startup, have partnered to develop semi-solid-state batteries for the Dodge Charger Daytona EV. These batteries feature an energy density of 375 Wh/kg, far exceeding the energy density of traditional lithium-ion batteries. Stellantis claims that these batteries can charge from 15-90% in just 18 minutes at room temperature. The company plans to test these batteries on a demo fleet next year.

Mercedes-Benz EQS (Demo EV)

Factorial also supplies semi-solid-state batteries to Mercedes-Benz. A prototype EQS, Mercedes-Benz’s flagship luxury EV, has demonstrated the potential of this technology. The semi-solid-state battery increases the vehicle’s range by 25% without adding weight or size to the battery pack. Mercedes-Benz aims to start mass production of this technology by the end of the decade.
