Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to launch the 2027 GLB, a model that combines the luxury of its smaller sibling, the CLA sedan, with the practicality of a seven-seat SUV. Set to arrive in the U.S. in late 2026, the 2027 GLB will be available in both electric (EV) and hybrid variants. But what exactly happens when you take the essence of a compact sedan and stretch it into a boxier SUV? Let’s take a closer look.
New Platform, New Car
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLB is built on the same Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) that underpins the new CLA sedan. In fact, the two vehicles share most of their mechanical components, with the GLB offering a more rugged and spacious version of the CLA’s compact luxury.
Like the CLA, the GLB will be offered as both an electric vehicle (EV) and a hybrid. The EV lineup will include the rear-wheel-drive GLB250+ and the all-wheel-drive GLB350 4Matic, both featuring Mercedes’ EQ Technology. The GLB250+ will have a power output of 268 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque, while the more powerful GLB350 will feature a dual-motor setup for a combined 349 hp and 380 lb-ft. Expect the GLB350 to hit 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, a quick leap for an SUV of its size.
Impressive Range and Charging Capabilities
The GLB EV’s performance extends beyond its speed. The 85-kWh battery offers an impressive range of 323 to 392 miles, though the U.S. EPA estimates are expected to be slightly lower. With an 800-volt system, the GLB can charge at up to 320 kW, providing an additional 162 miles of range in just 10 minutes on an 800-volt charger. It also comes with the Tesla-designed NACS charging port, meaning it will be able to use Tesla Superchargers, an added convenience for long road trips.
Hybrid Powertrain
The hybrid version of the GLB will follow the success of the CLA hybrid, featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor. This setup produces 208 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, enabling the GLB Hybrid to reach 60 mph in around 7.1 seconds. The hybrid will be offered in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive versions, with the latter able to send power to the rear wheels as needed for traction and performance. Expect similar fuel efficiency to the CLA Hybrid, with the added benefit of an electric motor that aids in power delivery and reduces overall fuel consumption.
Off-Road Ready
While the GLB is not Mercedes’ most rugged SUV, it’s ready for a bit of adventure. The all-wheel-drive models come with a Terrain driving mode, which adjusts the vehicle’s settings to maximize traction on loose or uneven surfaces. The optional 360-degree camera system includes a “transparent hood” feature, showing the ground directly in front of the vehicle on the central screen. Additionally, adaptive dampers are available for those who opt for the 20-inch wheels, enhancing the GLB’s ride quality and handling.
Interior: Luxury with a Practical Touch
Inside, the GLB mirrors the luxurious feel of the CLA sedan, but with more space and practicality. The dashboard is upright and modern, featuring a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment screen, both of which can be paired with the Super Screen option that includes a passenger display. The MBUX Virtual Assistant offers a conversational AI experience, allowing users to interact with the system more naturally. The new version even has short-term memory, making it more intuitive and responsive.
Space-wise, the GLB benefits from a longer 2.4-inch wheelbase, offering more legroom and headroom than its predecessor. The standard panoramic sunroof helps make the cabin feel even airier, and the optional Sky Control sunroof can switch from clear to opaque with the push of a button. For families, the GLB offers a third-row seat, making it a seven-passenger vehicle that can accommodate smaller adults or children.
Cargo and Practicality
As a compact SUV, the GLB offers competitive cargo space. The EV version provides 19.1 cubic feet of storage with the second row up and 17 cubic feet with the third row installed and folded. The hybrid version should have similar space, minus the frunk. The GLB also boasts a 4.5-cubic-foot frunk, which is a nice bonus, particularly compared to the Tesla Model Y.
Pricing and Availability
Mercedes-Benz has yet to announce official pricing for the U.S. market, but based on current trends, expect the GLB EV to start around $55,000, while the hybrid version should begin closer to $48,000. The GLB will be available in the U.S. in late 2026, offering a fresh alternative in the compact luxury SUV segment.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLB is an exciting evolution of the brand’s compact SUV lineup, bringing together the best elements of the CLA sedan and the practicality of a seven-seat SUV. With impressive EV performance, hybrid efficiency, and a spacious, tech-filled interior, the GLB promises to be a versatile option for families and luxury car enthusiasts alike. Stay tuned for more details as the 2027 model gets closer to its release.
