Ford Recalls 116,000 Vehicles Over Faulty Block Heaters

Ford and Lincoln have issued a recall for 116,672 vehicles equipped with potentially faulty engine block heaters—unfortunate timing as much of the U.S. braces for a severe cold snap. Around 80% of the population lives in areas expecting bitter temperatures over the next week, making block heaters critical for many drivers.

The recall affects three models:

  • 65,683 Ford Escapes (2013–2019)
  • 49,080 Ford Focuses (2013–2018)
  • 1,909 Lincoln MKC SUVs (2015–2016)

According to recall documents, solder joints in the block heater can crack over time. This allows engine coolant to leak into the heater’s power cord. As the coolant evaporates, it leaves behind electrically conductive salt deposits. These deposits can build up and cause a short circuit—potentially leading to a fire.

Importantly, the fire risk only exists when the vehicle is plugged in—specifically into a standard 110-volt outlet that lacks a working circuit breaker or GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter).

Fortunately, drivers may notice warning signs before a failure occurs. These include:

  • Coolant spots on the ground beneath the vehicle
  • Reduced or no cabin heat
  • Low coolant levels
  • An overheating engine

Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that damaged wiring may produce smoke or a burning odor—another clear red flag.

Ford plans to notify affected owners by mail in February. Owners should then take their vehicle to a local Ford or Lincoln dealership. Once parts are ready, technicians will replace the faulty block heater with an updated version at no cost. The company expects replacement parts to be available by April.

In the meantime, drivers in cold regions should inspect their block heater cords for damage, coolant residue, or unusual smells. If any issues appear, they should unplug the vehicle immediately and avoid using the heater until repairs are complete.

This recall highlights how a small component can pose serious risks—especially during winter. Ford’s proactive response aims to prevent fires and keep customers safe as temperatures drop.
