Porsche 911 Turbo S Hybrid to Debut by Year’s End

The highly anticipated Porsche 911 Turbo S hybrid will officially debut later this year. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed the news during the company’s mid-year earnings call. This electrified version of the Turbo S will mark a major step in the brand’s transition toward performance hybrids.

Blume’s announcement follows an earlier statement by former CFO Lutz Meschke, who revealed the company’s hybrid plans in October 2024. The new Turbo S will use battery technology developed by V4Smart, a company that Porsche recently acquired from the Varta AG Group. The same cylindrical battery cells already power the T-Hybrid system in the facelifted GTS model.

Currently, V4Smart produces these 1.9-kWh batteries in Ellwangen and Nördlingen. Porsche plans to expand production and increase the workforce at these sites to 375 employees by year-end. These efforts are aimed at preparing for the upcoming wave of hybrid 911 variants.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S hybrid is expected to offer more power than the current 992.1 model. That model already produces 640 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque from a twin-turbo 3.8-liter boxer engine. With electrification, those figures could climb. However, hybrid systems add weight. For instance, the GTS hybrid gained 103 pounds in U.S.-spec. Therefore, Porsche may need to focus on reducing weight in other areas to maintain balance and handling.

Blume hinted that Porsche is working on new derivatives that are “a bit quicker” than previous versions. This signals the company’s goal to push the limits of performance, even with added hybrid hardware.

Rumors continue to swirl about a hybrid version of the GT2 RS. However, Porsche typically saves that model for later in the generation. It is the most track-focused version of the 911, and official confirmation is still pending.

Porsche is also phasing out the current 718 Cayman and Boxster models, with production ending this October. In their place, all-electric successors are on the way. These new EVs will arrive after the electric Cayenne, which is scheduled to hit the market in 2026. Originally, Porsche had planned to launch the 718 EVs first, but the order changed.

Meanwhile, Porsche will release a gas-powered Macan successor in 2028. However, the company has no plans to develop new combustion-engine Boxsters or Caymans beyond the current generation. This means the next chapter for Porsche’s mid-engine lineup will be fully electric. While fans may miss the internal combustion sound and manual gearbox, Porsche believes electrification will redefine sports car performance.

The upcoming Porsche 911 Turbo S hybrid blends heritage with innovation. Porsche is not just keeping up with the global EV trend—it’s aiming to lead in high-performance electrification. With more power, new battery technology, and improved efficiency, this model could set new standards in the hybrid sports car segment.
