Volkswagen is gearing up to release the most powerful Golf in its history, marking the 25th anniversary of the Golf R model. Set to debut in 2027, this new Golf R will be equipped with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine, which it shares with the Audi RS3, making it a true performance powerhouse.
Volkswagen Golf R to Celebrate 25th Anniversary
The upcoming Golf R will serve as a grand farewell to the “clean gasoline” engine before Volkswagen fully transitions to electrification. The new 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine is set to deliver 400 horsepower, significantly outpacing the current Golf R, which is powered by the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 333 horsepower.
This upgrade will enable the new Golf R to achieve remarkable acceleration times, potentially making it the fastest Golf yet, with a 0 to 100 km/h time faster than the current model’s 4.6 seconds.
Engine Performance and Design Changes
The five-cylinder engine will push the Golf R to new heights, but it will require modifications to the car’s suspension to accommodate the added weight. Despite the performance boost, the new Golf R is expected to gain around 25 kg compared to the current model, which weighs 1,545 kg. It will also feature a reconfigured version of Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG transmission to enhance power delivery.
The RS3’s Influence
The five-cylinder engine has already been proven in the Audi RS3, where it delivers 400 horsepower, and in the RS3 Performance Edition, which ramps up the power to 407 horsepower. This engine’s success in the Audi lineup has confirmed its potential to elevate the Golf R to new performance levels.
Volkswagen aims to make the Golf R the top contender on the domestic charts once again, with its powerful engine and the exciting performance enhancements over previous models.
