Kia planned to launch the 2026 EV9 GT in the U.S. before the end of 2025. This top-tier variant was expected to feature 500 horsepower, a 4-second sprint time, and sporty visuals. However, Kia recently delayed the EV9 GT, and it is unclear if it will ever make it to the U.S. market.

What Caused the Kia EV9 GT Delay?

Kia initially intended to release the EV9 GT in the U.S., but shifting market conditions have delayed the launch. The luxury electric vehicle market in the U.S. has cooled, and the expiration of the $7,500 federal tax credit has made expensive electric vehicles harder to sell. As a result, Kia has postponed the EV9 GT’s release indefinitely.

Kia confirmed the delay and cited changing market conditions, which also impacted the upcoming EV4 sedan. These shifts in demand and the difficulties of selling high-priced EVs have led Kia to reassess its plans for the EV9 GT.

The Role of Tariffs and Manufacturing Challenges

Another issue may be the tariffs on imported South Korean cars. While the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 are produced in the U.S., performance models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT are manufactured in Korea. If Kia had planned to do the same for the EV9 GT, the 15% tariff on South Korean imports could have made the vehicle less viable for U.S. buyers. This added cost might have contributed to the delay.

Pricing Concerns: Is the EV9 GT Worth It?

Kia had priced the EV9 GT at around $81,000, about $10,000 more than the EV9 GT-Line. The performance upgrades, such as the electronically controlled suspension, rear limited-slip differential, and sportier brakes, may not appeal to all buyers. Many consumers in this segment may not find the extra performance and adjustments worth the higher cost.

The EV9 GT also features exterior modifications, including aggressive bumpers, unique wheels, and green-painted brake calipers. Inside, sporty seats with side bolsters, a three-spoke steering wheel, and green accents would indicate it’s a top-tier model. Despite these enhancements, the price increase may make the EV9 GT less attractive to U.S. buyers.

Global Launch and U.S. Uncertainty

While Kia began taking orders for the EV9 GT in the U.K. in June, deliveries have yet to start. In the U.S., some dealers received demo vehicles, but there have been no driving reviews or videos available. Only static walkarounds from U.S. and Canadian dealers have surfaced online, leaving the future of the EV9 GT uncertain for U.S. customers.

Looking for Alternatives?

If you’ve been waiting for the Kia EV9 GT, now might be the time to explore other electric vehicle options. With competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model X offering similar performance and features, other manufacturers are filling the gap left by the delayed EV9 GT. Consider these alternatives, as the future of the EV9 GT in the U.S. remains uncertain.
