Infiniti’s High-Performance Push

Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury division, plans to challenge Mercedes-AMG and BMW’s M division with high-performance vehicles. The brand is collaborating with Nissan’s Nismo motorsports unit to develop low-volume, high-revving versions of current and future models. As a result, Infiniti will deliver cars that offer both exceptional performance and luxury. The project is currently in advanced planning.

Infiniti intends to make substantial performance improvements. The goal is to significantly boost horsepower while ensuring reliability. This approach marks a departure from the Infiniti Performance Line (IPL), which only offered incremental upgrades in the past. Therefore, the company aims to exceed minor changes and offer real performance.

Infiniti’s U.S. market share dropped sharply, from 6.1% in 2018 to just 2.8% in 2023. To turn this around, Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier is betting on high-performance models to create a “halo effect.” These models will excite buyers and boost the brand’s visibility. As a result, Infiniti hopes to recapture attention in the luxury market, just as past models like the G35, G37, and FX once did.

Looking ahead, Infiniti plans to introduce high-performance versions of models such as the QX80 SUV, Q50S sedan, and QX65 crossover. The QX80 Track Spec concept, shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, showcases the direction Infiniti is heading. This concept vehicle features a twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 50% more power than the standard QX80 model.

Additionally, Infiniti will limit production to just 1,000 units over two years. This exclusivity will attract affluent buyers who want rare, high-performance vehicles. The Track Spec will likely be priced around $150,000, positioning it against high-end competitors like the Escalade-V.

Ultimately, this initiative is part of Infiniti’s strategy to reclaim its position in the luxury automotive market. By offering high-performance variants, Infiniti aims to reconnect with customers and demonstrate its innovation. These models will appeal to buyers who value performance, exclusivity, and sophisticated design.
