Trump recently expressed admiration for Kei cars—tiny, fuel-efficient vehicles from Japan. During a briefing, he called them “really cute” and compared them to the classic Volkswagen Beetle. Trump added that he wants these vehicles to be built and sold in the U.S. He also authorized the Secretary of Transportation to immediately approve the production of these cars.
Kei cars have strict size, engine, and power restrictions. While they are too small for most U.S. buyers, they have a niche following. Trump’s push to bring these cars to the U.S. focuses on their fuel efficiency. In a market concerned with rising gas prices, this could attract environmentally conscious buyers.
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said that the department is working to clear the regulatory path. He emphasized that U.S. automakers like Toyota can now produce and sell smaller cars. However, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) still pose a major hurdle. Kei cars do not meet these standards. These regulations ensure that all U.S. vehicles pass strict safety tests. Without adjustments, Kei cars may never be able to meet these requirements.
It remains unclear which FMVSS rules Duffy plans to change. Some vehicles, like track-only models, already bypass certain safety rules. But it’s uncertain whether Kei cars can follow this example. FMVSS standards ensure crashworthiness, a feature that Kei cars do not prioritize.
If the regulations are relaxed, it could transform the U.S. car market. Despite Americans’ preference for larger vehicles, the demand for small, fuel-efficient cars might rise. Cities with heavy traffic and limited parking might welcome such compact cars. However, Kei cars must convince consumers who prefer larger, more powerful vehicles.
Trump’s initiative could also bring U.S. and Japanese carmakers together. If successful, the Kei car could change how Americans view small cars. It may even boost demand for compact, eco-friendly vehicles. Yet, there are still hurdles to overcome. Regulatory challenges and market acceptance remain key.
