Renault Filante Sets New EV Efficiency Benchmark

Renault’s Filante electric vehicle has set a new benchmark for efficiency. It achieved 8 miles per kWh at highway speeds. This feat demonstrates the potential of future electric vehicles (EVs) to improve efficiency, even with existing battery technology.

The Filante is not just a concept car; it’s a one-off test vehicle. It was designed to explore EV efficiency limits. During a controlled test, it covered an impressive 626 miles (1,008 km) on a single charge. The car averaged a speed of 63 mph (102 km/h). After finishing, it still had 11% battery life left, which means it could have gone further. It could have potentially reached nearly 680 miles (1,100 km).

The vehicle’s efficiency is due to several factors. Its low-drag design reduces air resistance, while its lightweight structure (2,200 pounds or 1,000 kg) and narrow tires contribute to improved range. These features allowed the 87-kWh battery to perform better than most EVs on the market today. For example, cars like the Tesla Model 3 or Lucid Air usually only achieve 5 miles per kWh.

Key Features Behind the Renault Filante’s Efficiency

The Renault Filante’s impressive range is due to its advanced design. Its low-drag shape minimizes air resistance at higher speeds. The narrow tires also reduce rolling resistance, which helps boost energy efficiency.

Additionally, the Filante uses steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire systems. These reduce weight and help the car use less energy. Michelin’s specially designed tires further lower drag, improving overall energy efficiency.

While Renault’s Scenic E-Tech, which uses the same battery, is rated for about 380 miles (610 km) on the WLTP test cycle, the Filante’s performance under high-speed conditions shows that future Renault EVs could exceed these numbers. The lessons learned from the Filante could soon be applied to mass-market models.

The Renault 5 E-Tech will debut soon with an estimated range of 4.3 miles per kWh. This shows that Renault is dedicated to improving the efficiency of its EVs. The Twingo E-Tech, which will debut next year, is also expected to deliver even better energy efficiency due to its smaller size and lighter weight.
