At the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota surprised enthusiasts with the reveal of a limited-edition GR Yaris Morizo RR, taking the already legendary hot hatch to new heights. Despite earlier rumors about a potential mid-engine MR2 revival, Toyota instead unveiled a special edition GR Yaris, designed with input from Akio Toyoda, the company’s chairman and motorsport enthusiast. The car promises to be a collector’s item, offering a unique blend of performance, exclusivity, and motorsport-inspired features.

The Birth of the GR Yaris Morizo RR

The GR Yaris Morizo RR is the brainchild of Akio Toyoda, whose racing alter ego, Morizo, has been involved in Toyota’s motorsport efforts. Toyoda, who competed in the 2025 Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race, was inspired by the experience to create this special edition. With only 100 units set to be produced for Europe and Japan, the GR Yaris Morizo RR is designed to push the boundaries of Toyota’s performance car offerings, both on and off the track.

Exclusive Features That Set the Morizo RR Apart

The GR Yaris Morizo RR isn’t just an ordinary version of the already impressive GR Yaris. Toyota has packed it with a range of exclusive features to make it stand out from the crowd:

  • Gravel Khaki Paint: Every Morizo RR is finished in this unique color, a nod to the rugged rally heritage of the GR Yaris. The earthy tone complements the car’s motorsport-ready appearance.
  • Bronze Wheels: Matte-bronze wheels add an extra touch of visual flair, paired with yellow-painted brake calipers that add a splash of contrast against the bodywork.
  • Carbon-Fiber Rear Wing: Inspired by the racing car, the carbon-fiber rear wing isn’t just for show. It’s designed to enhance aerodynamics, providing the car with the stability needed for high-speed cornering.
  • Carbon-Fiber Hood: A lightweight, performance-driven addition to the Morizo RR, improving both the car’s weight distribution and aesthetic appeal.

Inside the GR Yaris Morizo RR: A Racing-Inspired Cabin

The interior of the GR Yaris Morizo RR is a motorsport enthusiast’s dream. Toyota has focused on creating an experience that’s as thrilling as the drive itself, starting with a smaller-diameter steering wheel covered in racy microsuede. The steering wheel also features modified paddle shifters and switches inspired by rally cars, making it clear that this edition is designed with the track in mind.

Other notable interior features include:

  • Serialized Plate: Each Morizo RR comes with a numbered plate, commemorating its place in the limited-production run.
  • Bespoke Digital Gauge Cluster: The car comes with a fully digital gauge cluster that includes a “Morizo” drive mode, designed to optimize the car’s performance for high-speed driving. This replaces the regular Gravel setting and gives drivers a more tailored driving experience.
  • Yellow Stitching: A subtle but striking detail, yellow stitching adds a pop of color to the otherwise grayscale interior, reflecting the car’s sporty nature.

Performance and Handling: Inspired by the Nürburgring

Under the hood, the GR Yaris Morizo RR retains the familiar 257-hp 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that powers the regular GR Yaris. However, this edition is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, offering smoother gear shifts and enhanced performance. Toyota has also reworked the car’s suspension, with dampers that have been tuned based on the learnings from Toyoda’s Nürburgring experience. The car’s power steering system has also been updated to ensure optimal handling on both the road and the track.

Availability and How to Get One

Unfortunately for fans in the United States, the GR Yaris Morizo RR won’t be making its way to U.S. shores. The car will only be available in Europe and Japan, with only 100 units allocated for each market. To decide who gets the privilege of owning one, Toyota will hold a lottery through the GR app. Interested buyers will need to enter the lottery for a chance to secure one of these exclusive, performance-driven machines.

Toyota’s Vision for the GR Yaris Morizo RR

The GR Yaris Morizo RR is a bold statement of Toyota’s commitment to blending motorsport heritage with street performance. With exclusive features, advanced engineering, and a clear connection to the world of racing, the Morizo RR represents the pinnacle of Toyota’s performance-oriented philosophy. The decision not to reveal a new MR2, as many had expected, only underscores Toyota’s focus on perfecting what it already has, pushing the GR Yaris into a new, high-performance realm.

As the world of performance cars continues to evolve, it’s clear that Toyota’s influence will remain strong. With the GR Yaris Morizo RR, the brand has once again set the stage for a new generation of hot hatches that prioritize performance, heritage, and driver engagement.
