Hyundai’s next pickup truck could be the most exciting model the brand has ever launched, thanks to some intriguing patents recently filed by the company. These patents suggest that the South Korean automaker is exploring the possibility of an electric truck with a removable roof, similar to the Jeep Gladiator, alongside a midgate design that allows longer cargo to be carried. The move signals Hyundai’s ambition to compete head-to-head with giants like Ford and Toyota in the pickup segment, with a focus on fresh, innovative features.

The Removable Roof Patent

One of the most exciting details from Hyundai’s latest patents is a removable roof mechanism. The system, which would allow the roof of the truck to be removed and replaced easily, is designed to provide passengers with an “expanded sense of openness.” The technology promises better sealing with multiple weather seals to ensure the truck remains waterproof when the roof is removed.

The patent, filed with both the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Germany’s DPMA, indicates that Hyundai is taking its design seriously. The roof mechanism will not only be functional but will also be secure, preventing any weather-related mishaps, even after frequent use. This design would be a game-changer, especially for those seeking a convertible experience in a rugged pickup truck.

The Midgate Patent

In addition to the removable top, Hyundai has also filed a patent for a midgate system, a feature that allows for the rear bulkhead of the cabin to be removed. This concept, reminiscent of the Chevrolet Avalanche, would allow longer cargo to pass through into the cabin area. The midgate would create a seamless transition from the bed to the interior, expanding the truck’s hauling capabilities. If implemented, this feature would make Hyundai’s pickup truck a versatile option for both everyday use and adventure-filled trips.

Hyundai’s Big Push in the US Market

Hyundai is making its intentions clear— it wants a slice of the lucrative US pickup truck market. Hyundai CEO Jose Muñoz confirmed that the brand is eyeing the Toyota Tacoma as a key target in the segment. The company plans to enter the high-volume truck market, where models like the Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevy Colorado dominate.

The new truck, which will reportedly be a body-on-frame model, is part of Hyundai’s strategy to boost its presence in the US market. With plans to increase vehicle sales from 834,000 in 2024 to 1.44 million by 2030, Hyundai is looking to introduce new models that will help it capture more market share in various segments.

Could This Be the Coolest Pickup Ever?

While Hyundai has yet to officially confirm all the details of the upcoming truck, these patents suggest it will be far from ordinary. A removable roof and midgate design would make this truck stand out in the crowded market, offering something truly unique for those who want a blend of adventure, practicality, and style in their vehicle.

Given Hyundai’s history of bold design choices and the growing excitement around their new truck plans, it’s clear that they are looking to make a serious impact in the pickup truck world.
