2026 Subaru Solterra First Drive Review
The 2026 Subaru Solterra is Subaru’s most convincing electric vehicle yet. With more range, improved powertrains, and refined ride quality, it feels like a complete step up from its predecessor. Driving through the Colorado Rockies, the upgraded Solterra proved to be composed, efficient, and surprisingly capable both on and off the road.
More Range and Faster Charging
Range increases significantly, from 227 miles to 288 miles on the base Premium trim. Limited and Touring trims deliver 278 miles. Efficiency is pegged at 3.5 miles per kWh, making it competitive for daily use.
Charging has also been upgraded. DC fast charging speeds now reach 150 kW, cutting 10–80% charging time from 35 minutes to 30. Level 2 charging is faster too, boosted to 11 kW. The addition of the Tesla-style North American Charging Standard (NACS) port means instant access to thousands of Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada.

More Powerful Motors
Subaru’s engineers fitted lighter, more efficient permanent magnet motors. Standard trims now make 233 hp, up from 215 hp, while XT trims deliver a punchy 338 hp thanks to a stronger front motor. On mountain roads, the Limited XT impressed with quick, smooth acceleration, masking its 4,475-pound weight with ease.
Cabin Refinement and Ride Quality
Subaru has worked hard to make the cabin quieter. Acoustic glass, improved insulation, and stiffer motor mounts reduce wind and vibration noise. The result is a more refined, relaxing drive, especially at highway speeds. Handling is sharper thanks to lighter control arms and stiffer springs, though steering still feels overly light and vague.
Inside, the Solterra gets a cleaner dashboard with higher-quality materials and a redesigned center console. A new 14-inch touchscreen is standard, supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Two wireless charging pads, physical knobs for volume and climate, and neatly placed drive-mode controls make the layout user-friendly.
Off-Road Confidence
While not a hardcore off-roader, the 2026 Subaru Solterra proved capable on rough trails. Subaru’s X-Mode adjusts torque, traction, and braking for tricky conditions. During an unscripted off-road detour, the Solterra handled steep climbs and uneven terrain without losing composure. With 8.3 inches of ground clearance, it nearly matches Subaru’s combustion SUVs, though a Wilderness trim would take it even further.
Verdict: Subaru’s Best EV Yet
The 2026 Subaru Solterra is finally a serious EV contender. It doesn’t quite beat the Tesla Model Y or Hyundai Ioniq 5, but it brings unique Subaru strengths: brand loyalty, practical features, and all-weather capability. With younger buyers showing strong interest, Subaru’s refreshed EV lineup—including the Trailseeker and Uncharted—may finally give the brand the foothold it needs in the electric era.
Pricing remains the final unknown. If Subaru keeps it competitive, especially around the mid-$30,000 range, the Solterra could secure a strong spot in the EV crossover market.
