Chinese automaker enters East Africa with AION Y and ES9 models

China’s GAC Group made its East African debut by launching two electric vehicle models—AION Y and ES9—in Addis Ababa. The event marked a major step in Ethiopia’s push toward clean transportation.

Government officials praised the move, noting that EV adoption aligns with national goals for energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. The Ethiopian Investment Commission emphasized the importance of foreign partnerships in accelerating the country’s EV transition.

GAC’s entry brings advanced technology and competitive pricing to Ethiopia’s auto market. The AION Y offers compact urban mobility, while the ES9 targets longer-range travel with premium features.

This launch reflects growing interest in electric mobility across Africa, where infrastructure development and climate goals are reshaping transportation priorities. GAC’s investment signals confidence in Ethiopia’s market potential and its role in the continent’s green future.
