Nissan Orders Large-Scale Recall of Rogue SUVs in U.S. Over Powertrain Concerns

Nissan Motor Co Ltd is recalling nearly 643,000 Rogue sport utility vehicles across the United States following two separate safety issues that could potentially affect engine performance and vehicle drivability, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall affects a combined total of 642,698 Nissan Rogue SUVs and centers on mechanical defects that may result in loss of drive power, posing safety risks for drivers and passengers.

Two Distinct Mechanical Defects Identified

The recall has been divided into two categories, each addressing a different component within the vehicle’s powertrain system.

The first recall involves 318,781 Rogue SUVs that may contain defective throttle body gears. According to NHTSA, the gears can break over time, potentially disrupting airflow management within the engine. A malfunctioning throttle body can reduce acceleration response and, in some cases, cause a sudden loss of propulsion.

The second recall covers 323,917 Rogue SUVs due to concerns over damaged engine bearings. Worn or compromised bearings may lead to internal engine damage. In certain situations, this could result in the leakage of hot engine oil, increasing the risk of an engine fire and sudden loss of drive power.

Both issues raise concerns related to vehicle control and safety, particularly if power loss occurs while the vehicle is in motion.

Regulatory Guidance and Proposed Fixes

The NHTSA has advised that Nissan dealers implement corrective measures for affected vehicles. Remedies are expected to include reprogramming the engine control module software to optimize performance monitoring and replacing damaged or faulty components where necessary.

For vehicles impacted by throttle body gear issues, dealers may inspect and replace the throttle assembly if signs of wear or breakage are detected. For those affected by engine bearing concerns, inspections will determine whether engine components require replacement.

Owners of impacted vehicles are expected to receive official notification letters outlining next steps and instructions for scheduling dealership service appointments.

Broader Industry Context

Automotive recalls remain a routine but critical part of industry safety oversight. Manufacturers are required to act promptly when defects that may compromise vehicle performance or occupant safety are identified.

The Nissan Rogue has been one of the brand’s best-selling models in the United States, making the scale of this recall particularly significant. High-volume models often amplify the logistical and financial implications of such actions, as repair campaigns require coordination across nationwide dealership networks.

Powertrain-related recalls can draw heightened scrutiny because of the potential impact on drivability and fire risk. Loss of drive power while operating at highway speeds or in heavy traffic can create hazardous situations for motorists.

Consumer Impact and Brand Implications

While recalls can temporarily affect consumer confidence, prompt regulatory reporting and transparent corrective action are typically viewed as responsible responses within the industry.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the NHTSA’s online recall database to determine whether their SUV is included in either recall category.

For Nissan, addressing the issue efficiently will be key to maintaining trust among U.S. customers, particularly as competition intensifies in the SUV market segment.

The recall process is expected to begin soon, with dealerships preparing to handle inspections, software updates, and part replacements as required.
