Volvo has officially unveiled its highly anticipated EX60 midsize electric SUV, positioning it as a transformative vehicle in the world of electric mobility. The EX60 is being marketed as a “game-changer” by Volvo, addressing key barriers that have slowed widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). With features like a competitive price, remarkable range, fast charging times, and cutting-edge onboard technology, Volvo’s new electric SUV could significantly impact the EV market.

An EV that Competes on Price and Performance

Volvo’s EX60 will be priced similarly to the brand’s best-selling plug-in hybrid, the XC60, at €67,990 ($79,610) in Europe. This pricing is expected to appeal to consumers who have hesitated to transition to electric vehicles due to high costs. CEO Håkan Samuelsson emphasized that the EX60 was designed to address the three main concerns that have made consumers wary of fully electric cars: limited range, slow charging times, and high prices.

With over 500 miles of range on a full charge, the EX60 competes with traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, offering long-distance capabilities that were once exclusive to gasoline-powered cars. Furthermore, it supports 400 kW fast charging, allowing the vehicle’s battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in just 10 minutes, adding 211 miles of range in that short time—an impressive feat for an electric SUV.

Advanced Technology: AI-Powered Voice Assistance and Next-Gen Features

Volvo is also stepping up its game in terms of onboard technology with the introduction of artificial intelligence-driven voice assistance. The EX60 is the first Volvo vehicle to integrate Google’s Gemini, an AI assistant capable of engaging in natural, conversational interactions with drivers and passengers. This innovative feature enhances the user experience, making the EX60 not only a vehicle but a connected, intelligent companion.

The AI-powered system is part of a broader push to create a more personalized and seamless driving experience. Users can interact with the system intuitively, commanding the car to adjust settings or provide information without the need for extensive menus or commands. This technology aims to make the driving experience more effortless and interactive, blending AI and automotive technology.

Three Powertrain Options for a Customizable EV Experience

The EX60 comes in three distinct powertrain options, catering to different driving needs and preferences. The P12 AWD Electric variant offers the highest range, reaching up to 810 kilometers (503 miles), making it ideal for long-distance travel. The P10 AWD Electric variant offers up to 660 km of range, while the entry-level P6 Electric, a rear-wheel-drive option, offers up to 620 km on a single charge.

Each version of the EX60 is equipped with advanced battery technology, including a 10-year battery warranty and a commitment to reducing the vehicle’s carbon footprint. In Sweden, buyers will also receive three years of free home charging, a benefit that Volvo plans to expand to other markets.

Sustainable Design and Eco-Friendly Manufacturing

Sustainability remains a key focus for Volvo, and the EX60 is built on the company’s new SPA3 electric vehicle architecture. This platform features innovative technologies such as cell-to-body battery construction, which integrates the battery into the chassis to reduce weight and increase structural efficiency. Additionally, the EX60 is the first Volvo to use next-generation in-house-developed e-motors and megacasting, techniques that help lower production costs and improve overall vehicle performance.

The EX60 also boasts the lowest carbon footprint of any fully electric Volvo model, matching the sustainability efforts seen in its EX30 compact SUV. Volvo’s commitment to reducing environmental impact extends beyond the car’s construction, with the company continuing to lead the industry in eco-friendly manufacturing processes.

The EX60 Cross Country: Enhanced Off-Road Capabilities

For drivers who need extra clearance and off-road capability, Volvo has introduced the EX60 Cross Country model. This version of the EX60 provides an additional 20 millimeters of ground clearance compared to the standard model, making it more suited for rougher terrain and dirt trails. The Cross Country version also offers optional air suspension, allowing drivers to increase the ride height by an additional 20 millimeters for a total of 40 millimeters of added clearance.

The air suspension system also provides the ability to lower the vehicle for more efficient driving on highways, improving aerodynamics and energy efficiency. This feature ensures that the EX60 Cross Country remains versatile, comfortable, and capable, whether you’re navigating city streets or exploring more challenging landscapes.

Safety: Volvo’s Continued Commitment to Innovation

As always, safety is a top priority for Volvo, and the EX60 includes a new multi-adaptive safety belt that offers smarter, more personalized protection for the front-row occupants. This innovation reflects Volvo’s ongoing dedication to creating the safest cars on the road, with advanced safety technologies designed to protect both drivers and passengers in all driving conditions.

Volvo’s reputation for safety is reinforced with the EX60, which comes equipped with a suite of standard and optional features designed to minimize risks and enhance driving confidence. With its combination of advanced safety, AI technology, and sustainable design, the EX60 sets a new standard for electric SUVs.

Looking Ahead: A New Era for Volvo and Electric Vehicles

Volvo Cars is set to start production of the EX60 in April 2026, with orders already open for eager buyers. The EX60 is not only a testament to Volvo’s commitment to electric vehicles but also a reflection of the company’s broader strategy to lead the automotive industry in sustainability, innovation, and safety. As electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, the EX60’s blend of advanced technology, impressive range, and eco-friendly design will likely make it a strong contender in the competitive EV market.

With its combination of cutting-edge features and a focus on reducing the barriers to EV adoption, Volvo’s EX60 could very well become a key player in the next generation of electric vehicles.
