Mercedes Debuts Pixelated EV Grille on 2027 GLC
The futuristic Mercedes Pixelated EV Grille will debut on the 2027 GLC, showcasing a unique blend of vintage inspiration and LED-powered innovation. This design introduces 942 illuminated square pixels, arranged with more than 140 LEDs to create live animations that include greetings, farewells, and a calming “breathing” glow.
Pixel Aesthetics Rooted in History
Though Hyundai made headlines with pixel-style designs, Mercedes claims deeper roots. The automaker unveiled a full Gallery of Grilles to support its argument. Inside the installation, black drapes framed more than a century of grille designs.
The standout was the 1902 Mercedes Simplex, which featured square-tube honeycombs for airflow—a design choice Mercedes says inspired today’s grille. The brand used similar square patterns in the 1950s, too. By bringing this concept back, Mercedes reclaims its visual legacy.

Identifiable by Day or Night
At night, the grille emits a distinct LED pattern that makes it easy to identify in a rearview mirror. During the day, the design resembles a traditional Mercedes grille, maintaining the brand’s luxurious presence. This smart use of light and geometry reflects the company’s ongoing drive to modernize while preserving identity.
The Mercedes Pixelated EV Grille will appear first on the 2027 GLC with EQ Technology. This model marks the battery-powered version of Mercedes’ top-selling luxury SUV and will set the tone for upcoming EVs.
Retro Design Meets Modern Innovation
The pixel look taps into today’s digital nostalgia, similar to design themes in games like Minecraft or retro handheld consoles. Unlike others, however, Mercedes merges this trend with luxury materials and precision detailing.
Will the grille be recognized as uniquely Mercedes? Or will some see Hyundai’s influence? As marketing experts often say, being first in the mind is more powerful than being first in history. Mercedes aims to do both.
Awaiting the Grand Reveal
The 2027 GLC’s full unveiling will happen at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich this September. Current prototypes wear camouflage, keeping the grille mostly hidden. But early impressions suggest that this EV will turn heads—both for its design and for how it repositions Mercedes in the electric SUV space.
Conclusion: Innovation Wrapped in Heritage
The Mercedes Pixelated EV Grille represents more than aesthetics. It signals a fresh identity for electric Mercedes vehicles. With expressive LED patterns, historical inspiration, and advanced lighting control, this grille shows how tradition can evolve through innovation.
